Moira Milton (nee Paterson)

Some of our older members or Associate Members may remember Moira C.Paterson, who has died at the age of 88 in England. Moira was Dunbartonshire Champion in 1949, several years before the County amalgamated with Argyll.

Moira was a semi finalist in the Scottish Championship in 1950 and 1951 and represented Scotland in the Ladies’ Home Internationals from 1948-52. She won the Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship at Troon in 1952 held over 36 holes, but had to play a further two holes before beating opponent Frances Stephen from England. Moira toured South Africa with a team of British players in 1951 and she was a member of the 1952 Curtis Cup team when GB&I defeated the USA 5-4 at Muirfield, the first win of the series for Britain since it began in 1932.

Funeral Notice

It is with sadness that the death of long-time member, Pat McCash, is reported. Pat was a Past Ladies’ Captain of Cardross Golf Club and a D&A member for many years, serving on the Committee in the 1990s. Together with Suzanne Cadden she won the Winter Foursomes in 1991 and 1994. Latterly Pat was an Associate member but retained a keen interest in golf and especially Bridge.

The funeral will take place on Wednesday 25th January 2012 at Cardross Crematorium at 11.15 a.m.

SUNDAY LUNCH

Those of you who attended the Annual General Meeting will remember that it was announced that instead of holding the usual Annual Dinner, a lunchtime get-together would be held this season. This will be a more convenient and attractive prospect for the members who face a long drive in the dark and we hope that everyone will welcome this change.

The Sunday Lunch is at Douglas Park Golf Club on Sunday 11th March – 12.30 for 1 o’clock.
Tickets, priced £12.50 are available from Committee Members – please contact your nearest Committee Member soon whilst they are still available.

Squad Night Out

“There was certainly no Team Talk when a number of the “potential Team Squad” got together for an après Christmas and New Year Night Out. They were joined by four Officials – Captain, Vice Captain, Secretary and Caddie Mistress. A good time was had by all. The “squad” were last seen heading towards Ashton Lane! Hopefully they got home safely and recover in time for June”.

The Night Out was mainly organised by Nikki and Anne. (I am assured the slightly blurred photos were taken by a completely sober hand!)

Winter Foursomes

Captain Alisoun Fairbairn and her partner Claire Harper have won through to the Winter Foursomes Semi-Finals beating Cathy Skinner and Janice Robertson at the 18th over a very muddy Helensburgh Golf Course last weekend. The remaining contenders have another ten days to play their ties, and as the weather seems to have taken a turn for the better there shouldn’t be a problem.

After the 3rd round of the Pre-Qualifying , Gemma was lying 44= with little hope of making the cut of the top 35 players after the 4th and final round. However Gemma pulled out all the stops and had a sub-par round of 70 to take her to 28th= and a place in the Ladies European Tour Qualifying School, which begins on Sunday over 90 holes.

GEMMA SPARKLES TO JOIN CLARE AND PAMELA AS QUALIFIERS

There will be five Scots in the field for the Ladies European Tour Qualifying School’s five-round Final stage, starting at La Manga on Sunday. Lynn Kenny and Carly Booth, exempt from the pre-qualifier which ended today will be joined by Clare Queen (The Carrick at Loch Lomond), GB and I international amateur Pamela Pretswell and, thanks to a sparkling sub-par fourth and final round, Glasgow’s former US college circuit player, Gemma Webster.
With the field of over 200 split into two groups, Queen finished joint 10th on five-over 293 in Group A while Pretswell came joint 18th on 296 in Group B. Webster surged from joint 44th overnight to joint 28th with a one-under-par 70 at La Manga North for a total of 299, making it through with a shot to spare.
Heather MacRae missed out by a single stroke after she too finished with a good score, a 71 at La Manga North. But for a disastrous opening round of 81, MacRae would have made it with ease.
Same goes for Majorca-based youngster Lauren Mackin. She had three respectable scores but was dragged down by a second-round 84.
Other Scots who failed to gain pass marks were former Scottish women’s champion and now St Andrews Links Trust caddie Linzi Morton, Nicola Melville, Carnoustie’s Katy McNicoll and Pamela Feggans from Patna, Ayrshire.

Gemma Webster at La Manga

Gemma improved her position on day 2 of the Pre-Q School competition at La Manga by 7 shots with a round of 72, which contained 6 birdies and 7 bogies. She is lying on 35= in her section of the competition. Gemma needs to stay at 35= or better after the following two rounds to play in the Final Q School.

CLARE AND PAMELA MOVE UP AT TOUR SCHOOLClare Queen and Pamela Pretswell made significant moves on Day 2 of the Ladies European Tour School pre-qualifying competition at La Manga, Spain today.
The 200 competitors have been split into two groups of 100. The top 35 and ties in each group at the end of 72 holes will go forward to the Final Q School over the same courses beginning on Sunday.
Queen shot a two-under-par 71 over the more difficult La Manga South course to be lying joint seventh in Group A on 145 at the halfway point. She had four birdies between the sixth and 13th holes.
Pretswell, still an amateur at Bothwell Castle GC, surged up from 30th to joint 17th in Group B on 147 after a par-matching 71 at La Manga North. It was the proverbial game of two halves for Pamela – four birdies in reaching the turn in 31 but no birdies in an inward half of 40- which included a double bogey 6 at the 11th.
Former Scottish amateur champion Linzi Morton from Tulliallan slumped in Group B to a share of 35th place with a 78. She struggled with 43 blows over the inward half.
Glasgow’s Gemma Webster is alongside Morton on 151 with a 72 which was a mixture of six birdies and seven bogeys.
Heather MacRae (Gleneagles Hotel) is well out of it in joint 64th place on 155 although she did improve to a 74 while Nicola Melville had a 75, also over La Manga North to be joint 96th on 164.
Back in Group A, Katy McNicoll from Carnoustie and Majorca-based Lauren Mackin have it all to do to reach the top 35 qualifiers over the next 36 holes. Katy is joint 56th on 154 after a second-round 79 while Mackin nosedived from a 72 to an 85 and a share of 69th place on 156.

New Year Wishes from Alisoun

Dear Members

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a really nice Christmas in spite of the pretty horrendous weather [certainly in Scotland] – all those who escaped to sunnier climes were very lucky!

So 2012 is here – and I sincerely hope it is a good year for all members and of course for the D&A Team who will be competing in the West Jamboree which we are hosting at Cardross Golf Club on 18^th, 19^th and 20^th June. Please come along and support the Team [in your blue shirts and sweaters]! A sea of D.& A. blue can be quite daunting to the opposition! Also, caddies will of course be required – watch out for notices about this.

The Sunday Lunch is on 11^th March – and I look forward to seeing many of you then.

The Fixture Cards will be available by then and please support as many competitions as you can.

Hopefully there will be some new members this year to boost our numbers once more – it would be great if you could encourage friends to join, remembering the handicap limit is now 26.

I hope you all have a good golfing year both in County fixtures and elsewhere, and hopefully the weather will take a HUGE turn for the better and we have lots of summer sunshine! We can but hope!
